Getting Your MAC Address: Linux

Explains a general way to find the MAC addresses of a Linux machine.

To find the MAC address of a Linux machine, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Terminal.
  2. Verify that net-tools is installed. Use the following command to install net tools.
    • sudo apt install net-tool
  3. Use the command ifconfig  for Ethernet, or iwconfig for Wireless.
  4. This will display all of the configuration information for the networking on the computer. The format of the output can also be different depending on the configuration. In general, the first block of text has the address after the word ether.
These steps are not always the best way to find it, but they work on most Linux distributions. Searching the settings menu might be easier, depending on the Linux distribution.
