Verify IPv4 Settings

It is possible that a computer is not communicating with the network correctly because it has special settings in the adapter’s Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) settings.

  1. Open Network Settings.

    Open Network Settings

  2. Click Change Adapter Settings under Related Settings

    Change Adapter Settings

  3. Select the adapter that is having issues. In most cases, they are labelled ‘Wi-Fi’ or ‘Ethernet’. Some older operating systems label them as ‘Local Area Connection’, so you may need to look at the icon to determine the connection type. When you have located the correct adapter, right-click the adapter and select Properties.

    Open Adapter Properties

  4. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties

Select Internet Protocol Version 4 and Open Properties

  5. Make sure that both the IP address and DNS server address options are set to Obtain automatically. If they are not, verify that the system does not need manual address configuration and set everything back to automatic configuration and click Advanced.

    Open Advanced IPv4 Options

  6. If the setting is set to Append these DNS suffixes (in order) and is listing ‘network.mst.edu’, ‘managed.mst.edu’, and ‘mst.edu’, change the setting to Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes and press OK.

Append primary and connection and save

  7. You can now close the IPv4 Properties window and attempt Internet connection again.
