Virtual Private Network

Setting up VPN and connecting to campus

A virtual private network, or VPN, is designed to allow you a secure connection to an internal computer network from any location in the world using the Internet. You can connect to the Missouri S&T network over virtual private network to get immediate access to your network drives and other information only available on a network computer on campus.

HOW TO CONNECT TO THE CAMPUS NETWORK FROM HOME USING S&T ANYCONNECT VPN SERVICE

The Cisco AnyConnect client is available for Window, MacOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. The following sections are separated by type of device you are using.

WINDOWS:

      1. Go to https://anyconnect.mst.edu.
      2. Enter MST-USERS\SSO UserId and pssword.
      3. Click 'Continue' to go to the next page.
      4. There is a Java applet that will run to automatically detect the platform you are on and install the software. If you do not run this, you must install the software manually after the applet times out.
      5. Click the link for your platform and download the installation file, continue installing the software (default options).

MAC:

      1. Go to https://anyconnect.mst.edu
      2. Enter MST-USERS\SSO UserId and password.
      3. Click 'Continue' to go to the next page.
      4. There is a Java applet that will run to automatically detect the platform you are on and install the software. If you do not run this, you must install the software manually after the applet times out.
      5. Click the link for your platform and download the installation file, continue installing the software (default options).

LINUX:

      1. Downloading the packages from anyconnect.mst.edu will give you an installer to run (including a vpnsetup.sh script to run to install it), but the alternative is much cleaner.
      2. Install openconnect (an open-source implementation of anyconnect) via your system's package manager. The names and requirements of this software depend on your distro and network management software.

                Examples:

Arch: openconnect, networkmanager-openconnect for networkmanager support

Ubuntu: openconnect, network-manager-openconnect for networkmanager support

Fedora: openconnect, NetworkManager-openconnect for networkmanager support

Mint: openconnect, network-manager-openconnect for networkmanager support

CentOS: openconnect, NetworkManager-openconnect for networkmanager support

IOS/ANDROID/WINDOWS MOBILE:

While the operating systems differ, the installation method is the same. Install 'AnyConnect' by Cisco Systems via the App Store/Play Store/Marketplace.

Note: Android has two versions, one called 'AnyConnect ICS+' and one called 'AnyConnect for Samsung KNOX'. If you do not use KNOX, install the ICS+ version.

RUNNING THE SOFTWARE:

      1. The software runs with default options, no special parameters need to be set or given.
      2. Provide the URL anyconnect.mst.edu, and click connect.
      3. Select group "S&T_Campus_Access" and enter your MST-USERS\UserId and password.
      4. Accept the banner to initiate the connection to the VPN.
      5. At this point, the AnyConnect client will minimize and you will be connected to the VPN.
Should the above steps fail and you need connect to VPN manually, follow the instructions given in the tutorial pdf below.
