Remote Desktop Connection

How to setup a remote desktop connection

To connect from off campus you must first create a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection.


Grant Access Rights

  1. Right-click on My Computer (on your desktop).
  2. Click Properties. My Computer > Properties
  3. Click the Remote tab. System Properties > Remote tab
  4. Check the box Allow users to connect remotely to this computer
  5. Record the first half of the full computer name before the period (e.g. r01joeminer). You will use this name to connect to your system remotely (if connecting to to a system from off-campus, you will need to use the full computer name (e.g. r01joeminer.managed.mst.edu).
  6. Click OK

Connecting to another System with Remote Desktop

Before you can establish a remote desktop connection, you need to have been granted access rights on that system.

  1. The remote system will need to be turned on (powered up) in order to establish a Remote Desktop Connection. It is not necessary to be logged out of the remote system.
  2. Click Start
  3. Click Programs
  4. Click Accessories
  5. Click Communications
  6. Click Remote Desktop Connection
  7. Type in the computer name (e.g. r01joeminer). (if off campus using vpn, you'll need the full name r01joeminer.managed.mst.edu)
  8. Click Connect.
    1. NOTE: The remote machine you are attempting to login to must NOT have anyone else (besides you) logged into it or you will not successfully establish a Remote Desktop connection.
  9. Login to the Remote System using your university username and password.

Set up a shortcut to Remote Desktop on your local system

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Programs
  3. Click Accessories
  4. Click Communications.
  5. Right-click Remote Desktop Connection
  6. Click Send To
  7. Click Desktop (create shortcut). This will put a Remote Desktop Connection icon on your local desktop and will be available every time you login to the local machine.
  8. Double-click the icon on your local system's desktop and you will initiate the Remote Desktop Connection program.

Disconnect a Remote Desktop Session

  1. Click the Close icon in the Remote Desktop Connection bar (or window).
  2. You will be prompted that your Remote Desktop Connection is about to be disconnected and asked if it is OK to continue.
  3. Click OK. This will terminate your Remote Desktop Connection.

CAUTION : Remember to logoff your local machine when you're finished. This is especially important if you use Remote Desktop while teaching a class in a technology-enhanced classroom. If you forget to logoff the local machine, anyone who comes into the classroom after you leave will have access to your university computer account!
