SolidWorks Licensing Information

Information describing which license of Solidworks is to be used.

Our campus license for the SolidWorks Educational Edition is for instructional teaching in classes and student team projects and is not to be used for research purposes. Generally, if SolidWorks will be used by faculty and graduate students for research, a University Research License (URL) needs to be purchased. The vendor has given us the following information to determine when a research license is required:

  1. If you're creating any sort of Intellectual Property (something that might be patented or licensed at a later time), then you should use a Research License.
  2. If you're getting any outside funding (NSF grants, private foundation grants, any other government or industry funding, etc.), then you should use a Research License.
  3. If you need to collaborate with industry and share SOLIDWORKS models or need to have anything manufactured outside the school, you should use a Research License.

Asset Management takes all requests for the installation of SolidWorks for determination of the proper SolidWorks license.

University Research Licenses for SolidWorks come in three editions:

  • URL Standard - $1998 and the annual subscription is $648
  • URL Professional - $2745 and the annual subscription is $748
  • URL Premium - $3998 and the annual subscription is $998

Researchers should take a look at alternative campus licensed software such as Autodesk Inventor Professional or Siemens NX.   Here is an article that compares Autodesk Inventor vs. SolidWorks: We don’t charge anything for Inventor Professional or NX.
